3 Signs of Poor Insulation

A house that is not properly insulated can result in higher energy bills and overworked furnaces and air conditioners. Because most insulation is inside the walls of the home, it can be difficult to know if it is bad. Checking the layers of insulation in the attic can give homeowners an idea, but if that looks ok then it is time to check for other signs. Frozen pipes, cold walls and floors and unexplained temperature fluctuations can all indicate a poorly insulated house.

1. Frozen Pipes

Anyone who lives in an area where the temperatures plummet below freezing during the winter months may have to deal with a frozen pipe at some point. If the cause for the frozen pipe cannot be easily spotted, it may be due to a lack of proper insulation. Ask insulation contractors Maryland to evaluate the situation and give a professional opinion.

2. Cold Walls

Insulation that is properly installed and thick enough should effectively separate the exterior and interior temperatures. As long as the existing insulation is working properly, the interior walls, ceilings and floors should not be cold to the touch in the winter. They should feel warm and dry, while the exterior walls should be cold.

3. Temperature Fluctuations

If there is a large difference in temperature between different rooms and all of the vents are open and operating properly, then there may be an issue with the insulation. The house should not become excessively warm in the summer or cold during the winter. If the weather is having a big effect on the internal temperature, then it is probably a good idea to have the insulation checked out.

Insulation can last for a long time, but over time it may become less effective. Remember to inspect the insulation on a regular basis to ensure it is still in good condition and take steps to prevent any serious problems from arising.
